Capistrano Valley Loses Heartbreaker in CIF Boys Soccer Final

An apparent overtime goal is overturned and Claremont scores three minutes later to deny the Cougars the victory in their first CIF championship match in 29 years.

By Mike Casey | March 5, 2011

In a wild finish, Cory Hodge’s header on a throw-in from Brennen Carter at 4:28 of overtime gave Claremont a 3-2 victory over Capistrano Valley and the CIF Southern Section Division 2 boys soccer championship Saturday night at Mission Viejo High.

It is the second CIF boys soccer championship for Claremont (21-1-5), the last one coming in 1994. The Wolfpack won three of four playoff games in overtime. For Hodge, a senior defenseman, it was his eighth goal of the season and third in postseason, but more importantly his second straight “Golden Goal” after scoring with two minutes left in the second overtime period to defeat M.L. King in the semifinals.

However, the Cougars (16-6-7), who were making their first CIF title appearance since 1982, won’t be remembering the goal that Hodge score. Instead, they will be haunted by the goal that was called good, then no good, just three minutes earlier.

With Claremont leading 2-1, Felix Espinoza was injured with less than a minute left in regulation and replaced by Kyle Smith. Luis Vasquez took the free kick near the 40 yard line and centered it to Smith, who headed the ball off another player and past Wolfpack goalkeeper Jake Teagle with 43 seconds remaining to tie the score. It was just the second goal scored by Smith this season.

The Cougars got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff by Claremont and Mario Soto, who led the team with 16 goals this season, appeared to have scored on a low line drive. But the horn sounded just a split second before the ball crossed the goal line.

In overtime, Capistrano Valley appeared to score at the 7:42 mark on another header as the linesman raised his flag and the Cougars poured onto the field. But the linesman then ruled that Smith was offside, even though it appeared that one of the Wolfpack defensemen was standing on the goal line when the shot was made.

“He ruled offside but he couldn’t see the man standing on the line because of the post,” fumed Cougars coach Jason Sorrell. “[Cougars captain] Ben Manko ran over to tell the linesman that, but he wouldn’t listen. I can’t take anything away from Claremont, they played a good game. But [our players] did everything they could and they got robbed. The referee allowed the goal first then called it off.”

Claremont coach Fred Bruce-Oliver said he also thought the game was over.

“I thought it was the clincher [for them] when that flag went up. Then to come back and win the game like that, I don’t think this can take it anymore,” said Bruce-Oliver, placing his hand over his heart and his lucky 1994 CIF championship T-shirt that he wore under his shirt. “The guys just believed in themselves.”

Claremont took the lead just 2:20 into the match when Stephen Barba scored on a header on a free kick by Hodge. It was Barba’s first goal of the season. The score stayed that way through the first half as both teams got a bit chippy. The Cougars were whistled for four yellow cards and the Wolfpack two within a 16-minute frame, and both teams sustained bloody injuries, Russell Donaldson to his nose for Claremont and Manko on the back of his head. Both players returned to the game.

Capistrano Valley tied the score, 1-1, at 63:59 when Hodge was called for a hand-ball on a pass by Vasquez and Kevin Baboiyan made the penalty shot. But the Wolfpack took the lead right back nine minutes later on a counter-attack goal by Carter.

Even after the overtime goal by the Cougars was disallowed, they appeared to still have the momentum when Donaldson was given a red card after his second yellow. But the Cougars didn’t get an opportunity to take advantage of the Wolfpack being a player down as Hodge scored 31 seconds later.

“We had a fantastic season,” Sorrell said. “I think right now our players are more stunned than anything else. It was just a shame it had to end like that.”

However, one Cougars player felt it was more of a new beginning than an ending.

“We got one called back at the end of regulation and we got another called back in overtime, but that’s soccer,” Baboiyan said. “It’s a beautiful game because it can all change in an instant.

"We all stuck together and we really believed that we had the best team. I’m only a sophomore, but I think this is really the start of something big here. Our team is different. We’ve come back all year and we’ll do it next year.”

Capistrano Valley Beats La Habra, 1-0, to Advance to Division 2 Championships

Kevin Baboiyan’s goal in the 79th minute is enough to defeat La Habra in a CIF Division 2 semifinal and end a 29-year drought for the Cougars in the CIF finals.

(reprinted from www.patch.com)

It had been 29 years since Capistrano Valley’s boys soccer team had reached—and won—a CIF championship. And when the Cougars lost their top ranking midway through the season by winning only two of eight Sea View League matches to finish a distant third and barely make the playoffs, there was no one who thought this year’s team would end that drought.

Well, almost no one.

First-year coach Jason Sorrell and the Cougars refused to give up the dream, and they were aptly rewarded Tuesday afternoon. Kevin Baboiyan scored his seventh goal of the season with less than a minute remaining in regulation for a 1-0 victory over La Habra in a Southern Section Division 2 semifinal at Capistrano Valley High.

The Cougars (16-5-9) advance to the championship game against Claremont, which scored a 1-0 victory over ML King in the other semifinal, on a day, time and place to be announced by the Southern Section office.

The Highlanders, who were playing without Luis Garcia (three goals, two assists in the playoffs) because of a two-match red card in the quarterfinals, finish the season 16-4-8.

“Amazing,” said Sorrell, who took over a team that had lost its last 10 games last season and led them to four one-goal victories in the playoffs this season. “We knew defensively they were good. We knew it would be a one-goal game. Both teams only had two or three opportunities to score. We just didn’t give up.”

That never-say-die attitude is how it’s been for the Cougars all season, and the semifinal match against La Habra was a perfect example.

The older, more experienced Cougars kept the pressure on the younger, more inexperienced Highlanders for most of the game, but the defenses were outstanding for both teams. Each offense managed only two shots on goal in the first half, and the only shot on goal in the second half was Baboiyan’s game-winner.

It appeared the match was headed to overtime when Luis Vasquez broke loose at midfield and dribbled toward the right corner of the field. He suddenly passed to his left into an area in which leading-scorer Mario Soto was moving, but Soto played the ball through and it went to a wide-open Baboiyan, who easily slipped the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net past Highlanders goalkeeper Santiago Garcia.

The goal broke a two-game shutout streak for La Habra, which recorded 18 shutout wins or ties this season, and sent the entire Cougars team into a wild celebration.

“[The win] was not just me, it was all my teammates. We never gave up,” Baboiyan said. “I thought Mario was going to shoot it, by I yelled to him to let it go and it came to me. It was a blur. I couldn’t even see the ball go in, but I heard the crowd and my teammates.”

Said Sorrell: “The funny thing is, I had K.B. move to the left side for the last 10 minutes. He had been playing the right side. It almost looked like a broken play.”

Baboiyan said Sorrell told the team Monday of the Highlanders’ shutouts this season, so he knew that La Habra would be tough defensively. But the Cougars have been tough lately, too. Teddy Czaja had two saves, and Matt Bermudez was so well protected by defensive backs Ben Manko, Michael Haubenschild, Jensen Lee, Nick Godfrey and company that he didn’t see a shot in the second half.

“I told my friend when I heard [of La Habra’s shutouts] that statistics don’t matter in CIF,” Baboiyan said. “You see Edison, the No. 1 team in the country, and Mission Viejo [No. 1 in Division 2] and Tesoro all get beat [in the playoffs]. CIF is a different story. Even in the last minute we never gave up, and it won us the game.”

Baboiyan added that he wouldn’t expect anything less in the championship match.

“I’ve heard good things about both teams [ML King and Claremont],” Baboiyan said. “But we have one chance to win a CIF title for the first time in [more than] 20 years and I’m fully confident that we will win it. In fact, there’s a 100 percent chance we are going to win it. We all believe in each other.”

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!COUGARS HAVE A SPOT IN THE SEMI-FINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The boys continue their focus and persistance in search for a CIF Banner. The Friday Quarter Final game against Arlington High proved to be an exciting nail biter. With less than 20 minutes left in the first half, Mario Soto brought the fans to their feet with a well struck ball from beyond the penalty area that dipped right below the cross bar and in to break the scoreless tie. With 30 seconds to go until half time, Arlington headed in the ball to tie the game.

After numerous opportunities in the second half, neither team could score, and the game went into Over Time. After the first 10 minute OT, we were still tied at 1-1. Shortly after the second OT began, the Cougars were fouled and Luis Velasquez took the free kick. He served up a beautiful ball to Felix Espinoza who headed it in for the victory!!

The CIF Semi-Final Game is scheduled for Tuesday, 3/1 at 3:00 pm in Cougar Stadium against La Habra High who finished second in the Freeway League with a 13-3-8 overall record. Please come out and support the team!

COUGARS CONTINUE CIF PLAYOFF DRIVE TO QUARTER FINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With Cougar Stadium filled with students and parent supporters, the boys did not let the fans down. It was a scoreless game going into the last ten minutes of the first half when defender Ben Manko headed the ball into the net, just above a leaping Santa Ana goalie. As it turned out, that was all Capo needed to record the victory, as the defense and goal keeping continue to be outstanding. The shut out was the third consecutive win for the Cougars who appear to be on a quest for a CIF Banner.

The CIF Quarter Final game is scheduled for Friday, 2/25 at 3:00 pm in Cougar Stadium against Arlington High School who finished their Inland Valley league season tied for second place and had a 14-5-3 overall record. The boys could really use support in their playoff drive. Please come out and support the team!!

COUGARS WIN FIRST ROUND CIF PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cif winning shot

The boys came out strong in an overcast day in La Verne on Friday against Damien High School, who finished first in their league. Shortly after the opening kick off, the day quickly turned and the majority of the game was played during a steady rain. That didn't damper the Cougar spirit however, as Michael Haubenschild put a great ball into the net to give Capo the 1-0 lead. The Spartans came out in the second half a renewed team, playing with more energy and taking more shots on goal. Eventually one went in, tying the game. With soaked Cougar fans in the stands cheering the boys on and only about two minutes left in the game, Felix Espinoza answered the call and put one in giving Capo the 2-1 lead. Defenders Ben Manko, Jensen Lee and Ryan Steska did a fine job in the back, not allowing the Spartans to answer, handing Capo the victory!

Goalies Matt Bermudez and Teddy Czaja shared the duties and did an outstanding job of keeping a rain soaked ball from slipping through their hands.

Round Two of CIF Playoffs will be on Wednesday, 2/23 at 3:00 pm against Santa Ana at Capo. Please come out and support the team!

Best of luck to Coach Sorrell and the team. Go Cougars!!

*******************COUGARS MAKE CIF PLAYOFFS******************

What an exciting Varsity final league game against Trabuco Hills!

With Capo needing a victory to make the CIF playoffs, the pressure was on the Cougars in the Mustang Stadium. Capo was trailing 0-1 when Garrett Yacovone made an awesome shot to tie the game. With Luis Velazquez playing in his second game since his return, he led the Cougars up the field with his fancy footwork and sent the ball to Mario Soto who put it in to give Capo the lead. Ivan Villanueva added a third goal for insurance with an assist by Garrett Yacovone, as Capo played the spoiler on Senior Night at Trabuco Hills. Doing a great job to hold Trabuco Hills to one goal were Keepers Teddy Czaja and Matt Bermudez. The Mustang offense was kept in check by Defenders Ben Manko, Jensen Lee, and Ryan Steska.

Best of luck to Coach Jason Sorrell and the team in the CIF Playoffs!
